100% real insider advice from locals
The Inside Scoop
Port Hueneme is relatively small with a definite lack of fancy pants high end cuisine. Your best bet for this
kind of food is to make the drive south to Los Angeles. On the other hand, Dining options in Port Hueneme are affordable and
include some
hole-in-the-wall ethnic gems with delicious food you could very well pay a lot more money for in big city.
If you
spend any serious amount of time in Port Hueneme, expect to expand your foraging zone to nearby Ventura, Oxnard,
and Camarillo where you will find more options. Port Hueneme has very little in terms of actual "on the water"
eating, however the Channel Island's Harbor in Oxnard has several restaurants that provide the classic experience
of eating while watching boats putter about and while being attacked by seagulls.
This is a coffee shop, not a restaurant, and the only place to go for coffee before exploring the south beaches. Fortunately,
it's great, with a full range of coffee options and smoothies. Keep your eyes open for signs... the shop is hidden in the back of a tiny shopping plaza around the intersections of Hueneme and Ventura roads, which makes
it something of a local secret. Port Hueneme
Andy's
Quality:
Price:
Good, but not great, fish and chips, served from a cement hole-in-the-wall right on Hueneme beach. If you want some great ones, you'll have to make the drive to Andrea's at Ventura Harbor
(not sure if Andy and Andrea are related, but if so,
Andy should ask his sister for her recipe). Andy's sometimes features live local bands and all-you-can-eat nights that pull the locals out of the woodwork. Port Hueneme
Antonio's
Quality:
Price:
Tortillas filled with stuff and rolled and smothered with cheese on
plates of rice and beans. Nothing exciting here, but does the job at
prices a bit higher than they should be. I've always felt Antonios was a
bit dull on flavor, but everyone around me seems to think its great, and
the last couple of times I went I can't complain. They serve a great
bowl of freshly made chips, which helps. Port Hueneme
Baker's Square
Quality:
Price:
Although I normally try to support the little guy and eat at mom-and-pop restaurants, independents, and hole-in-the-walls, this national franchise
makes pies so good I can't resist feeding their corporate headquarters my cash. Let me repeat that, damn good pie. Did I mention damn good pie? If you
are in the mood for damn good pie...

Broasted Chicken
Quality:
Price:
"Broasted" is a fancy way of saying fried chicken, which this hole-in-the-wall does perfectly. But the real treat is the
authentic Filipino that appear periodically on the specials menu -- make sure to get them for lunch when they are newly cooked. Port Hueneme
Friends Cafe
Quality:
Price:
As local as you get, surfers rub shoulders with construction workers in this friendly and affordable place to get a plate of eggs for breakfast or a simple sandwich
for lunch. The fanciest thing you'll find on the menu at friends is eggs benedict (which are great), and that's the way people who eat here like it.Port Hueneme
Pho Saigon
Quality:
Price:
Highly Recommended! Unpretentious atmosphere, low prices, friendly staff, and large bubbling
bowls of delicious pho and other Vienamese staples. PS has one of those
menus that covers every permutation of every dish and then a few more,
including vegetarian options. Highly recommended.

Sushi Hanada
Quality:
Price:
Highly Recommended! The best place in Port Hueneme for sushi and the only place to go if
you want to avoid caterpillar rolls, pizza sushi, and other
non-traditional gimmicks. Chef Hanada runs a tight ship, refusing to
make silly-sounding rolls and placing signs on the table explaining
proper sushi etiquette. In addition to sushi and sashimi, Sushi Hanada
offers a full kitchen with tempura and other Japanese classics -- but
the sushi bar is still the reason to go. The food is first rate and
affordable and the music is jazz... always.

Sushi Ichiban
Quality:
Price:
If you are wondering why the owners of Sushi Hanada place little
signs on their tables explaining sushi etiquette, look no further than
Sushi Ichiban right down the street for your answer. Truly, one cannot
imagine a traditional sushi experience more wacked out than
the one you will find here, with steaming hot "pizza sushi" served fresh
from the broiler! It's not
that Sushi Ichiban doesn't have its own peculiar charm, but as long as
you are going to treat food like Play-Doh, you might as well include
some video games and complete the Chuck E. Cheese experience.

Tacos Jalisco
Quality:
Price:
Standard Mexican combos, steaks, and quite a few seafood options for the more adventurous. The fish tacos are particularly good but nothing blows you away.

Your classic dependable and affordable Thai restaurant found on corners throughout America with
a few Chinese dishes added to the menu for good measure. Port Hueneme

Bahia
Quality:
Price:
Located in nearby Oxnard, this is the place to go to get a superior
Mexican breakfast. It's a bit of a dive, right across from the Greyhound
station, but the Huevos Bahia (eggs smothered in pork and green chile)
and the Huevos Rancheros will make you ignore the odd characters that
interrupt your meal to sell you lanyards and other trinkets.
Oxnard
La Dolce Vita
Quality:
Price:
Highly Recommended! This is hands down the best restaurant in Oxnard featuring Italian and
Mediteranean fare.
Most entries are under twenty dollars and
would easily command twice that price in Los Angeles. Oxnard
