Thanks for visiting this site, an insider's view of Port Hueneme, a small beachfront town in Southern California. If you are thinking about visiting or moving here, or you are in the military and just got relocated,
click around this site to get the honest perspective of real folks who live here. Find out where locals eat, shop, and all the other stuff you won't find by visiting a big commercial website run by faceless
people in another state.
The first thing you need to know about Port Hueneme is how to say Hueneme properly. It's pronounced "Why-Nee-Mee." If you decide to live here for whatever reason, you'll probably want to say the name correctly and learn how to spell it
since everyone you meet that doesn't live here is going to be confused when you tell them where you live. Every once in a while someone will actually ask you where the name comes from and you can tell them it comes from the Indians and
that will get you off the hook a bit.
A Quick Overview
Port Hueneme is a port and beach town about an hour north of Los Angeles and more or less attached to Oxnard, a town known for agriculture, gangs, and its own strange sounding name. Most people in Los Angeles don't know Port Hueneme exists and shudder
when you tell them it's next to Oxnard. If you want to sound hip you can tell folks you live about a half hour north of Malibu, which is technically true.
Port Hueneme is the West Coast home of the Navy Construction
Battalion ("Seabees") and there is a bunch of other military stuff
nearby. It's not unusual to see guys in camoflague speeding down the
streets on their motorcycles. For the most part, however, the military
guys keep a low profile and stick to the base because, well, Port
Hueneme is a very quiet town without a single movie theater and the base
is well-stocked with theaters, gyms, golf courses, and other fun
stuff. If you want a good sense of how dull things are here, read the
Explore Port Hueneme News Blog.
The port itself is constantly busy. The main import seems to be cars, and on any given day you will see literally hundreds of new cars pouring from main gate of the port. Hey, this is Southern California, after all.
